Why Is Eric N. Olson Influential?

Eric N. Olson is a professor and chair of the Department of Molecular Biology, Robert A. Welch Distinguished Chair in Science, the Annie and Willie Nelson Professor of Stem Cell Research, and the Pogue Distinguished Chair in Research on Cardiac Birth Defects for the UT Southwestern Medical Center. He earned a B.A. in chemistry and biology and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Wake Forest University. He completed his postdoctoral studies at the Washington University School of Medicine.

Olson and his team have worked to better understand how the heart develops and works, as well as the behaviors of diseases and disorders of the cardiovascular and skeletal muscle tissue. He has provided fellow scientists with a blueprint for tissue formation and revealed the function of epigenetic mechanisms and microRNAs on the development of muscle tissue.

He has co-founded a number of biotechnology companies to take their scientific findings to create devices and therapeutic protocols that help patients with muscle diseases and cardiac conditions. Olson has received a number of important awards, including the Gill Heart Institute Award for Outstanding Contributions to Cardiovascular Medicine, the Pasarow Award in Cardiovascular Medicine, the Founding Distinguished Scientist Award from the American Heart Association, and the LeFoulon Delalande Grand Prix Award from the Institut de France and the French Academy of Science.
