Walton graduated from the University of Arkansas after studying business administration. He pursued a Juris Doctor degree from Columbia University Law School.

Walton used his degree to practice for Conner & Winters, the firm that represented Walmart at the time. He later joined Walmart as a senior vice president, and was eventually promoted to vice chairman. Upon his father’s death in 1992, Walton assumed the position of the chairman of the board of directors.
