Early life and education He obtained his Ph.D. in Sociology of Education from the University of Chicago in 1984. Career Until 2013 he had held the John D. MacArthur Chair in Sociology and Educational Policy Studies at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and chaired the Department of Sociology. He was also the director of the Wisconsin Center for Education Research. A particular focus of his research has been school structure, educational inequality, and school reform.
