He obtained a first class honours degree in mathematics from Southampton University. He followed that with a master's degree, with distinction, in structural engineering and a doctorate in numerical computation from Imperial College. He has spent most of his working life as an academic at the University of Hertfordshire , formerly the Hatfield Polytechnic. He had short spells in industry working as a research engineer in the aircraft industry and as a process engineer in the food industry.
