Why Is Alwi Shihab Influential?

According to Wikipedia, Alwi Abdurrahman Shihab is a scholar of the interaction of Christian and Muslim communities. Currently he is the Indonesian President's special envoy to the Middle East and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.
