Early life and education He was born in Årdal and grew up in Nattvik. He finished his secondary education at Eidsvoll in 1953 and graduated from the University of Oslo with the cand.philol. degree in 1962. He worked for the Norsk Ordbok project, then as a research assistant at the Norwegian Dialect Archive . After a research fellowship from 1968 to 1972, he issued his doctoral thesis Generasjonsskilnad i indresognsmål in 1974.
