According to Wikipedia, Charles Jastrow Mendelsohn was an American cryptographer and classicist. He was the only child of Rabbi Samuel Mendelsohn and Esther Jastrow. He was born in Wilmington, North Carolina. Education He graduated from the Episcopal Academy, Philadelphia in 1896. He was a Harrison Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania, which he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1900 and a PhD in 1904. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He joined the faculty of College of the City of New York as a tutor in Greek in 1905, becoming an instructor in 1907. He was a professor of ancient languages in 1917.
