Early years and amateur career Born in San Diego, California, Hoffman won the California state high school championship in 1994 and 1995, becoming the first two-time winner. He graduated from Poway High School in 1995. He qualified three times for the Buick Invitational as an amateur. In college, Hoffman was a member of the 1998 NCAA championship team at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He was an honorable mention All-American in the same year. While at UNLV, his teammates included Chris Riley, Chad Campbell, Bill Lunde, and Adam Scott. He graduated in 2000 with a bachelor's degree in communications and turned professional.
