Education Stern received his primary and secondary education in Montevideo, Uruguay, and started to study Medicine in 1971. In 1972 he moved to the United Kingdom and took a BSc in Biological Sciences at the University of Sussex, where he remained for his PhD , under the supervision of Brian Goodwin. He then moved to the Department of Anatomy and Developmental Biology at University College London for postdoctoral training with Ruth Bellairs, a noted embryologist.
