Early life Born in Akron, Ohio, he received a B.S. in applied mathematics from the University of Akron in 1982, and a PhD. in physics from Washington University in St. Louis under the supervision of Peter Fedders. He held term appointments in the department of physics at the University of Notre Dame, and Materials Science and Engineering and Physics at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, where his key mentors were Otto F. Sankey and Richard M. Martin.
