Ríos Montt's counter-insurgency strategies significantly weakened the Marxist guerrillas organized under the umbrella of the Guatemalan National Revolutionary Unity , while also leading to accusations of war crimes and genocide perpetrated by the Guatemalan Army under his leadership.
