Background Moran was raised in Havana, Cuba, and came to the United States during high school. He studied for an B.A. in Spanish American Literature at Spring Hill College in Alabama. He then completed an M.A. in Latin American History and a Ph.D. in Social Anthropology at the University of Florida, where he studied the effects of the Trans-Amazonian Highway.
