He was Emeritus Professor of English History at the University of Birmingham. Early life Ives was born on 12 July 1931, Essex, England into a Plymouth Brethren family. He was educated at Brentwood School, then an all-boys public school in Brentwood, Essex. He studied history at Queen Mary College, London, graduating with Bachelor of Arts . He then went on to complete his Doctor of Philosophy from the same university.
