He wrote a dozen of plays, that have been staged worldwide and have made him one of the most famous contemporary playwrights. He is, according to The Times, "the most exciting playwright of our time". He wrote and directed his first film, 2020's The Father, based on his play of the same name, starring Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman. The film received six nominations at the 93rd Academy Awards, including Best Picture, with Zeller winning Best Adapted Screenplay and Hopkins winning Best Actor. Since then, it has been cited as one of the best films of the 2020s and the 21st century.
