He was Director of the Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies from 2000 until 2021. From 1993 until 2006, he was professor Anthropology at the University of Utrecht. From 2006 until 2015, he was professor Caribbean History at Leiden University.
