Under the leadership of Chancellor Angela Merkel, he served as Federal Minister of the Interior and as Minister for Food and Agriculture . Friedrich resigned from that position in February 2014. Friedrich has a controversial history with minorities in Germany, causing outrage in 2013 after telling journalists that Islam in Germany is not something supported by history at any point.
