Early life and college Elwell spent much of his childhood in Southern California, graduating from James Monroe High School in 1975. He graduated from California State University, Bakersfield in 1979, with a B.A. in English. He attended graduate school at Louisiana State University from 1979-80 before attending and graduating from the University of Southwestern Louisiana in 1982 with an M.S. in Communication and Theatre. He earned a Ph.D. in Speech Communication and Theater from Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 1986.
