Ujdur played college baseball for the Minnesota Golden Gophers. He was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the fourth round of the 1978 Major League Baseball Draft, and began his career with the Lakeland Tigers that year, finishing with a 5-2 win-loss record and a 2.39 earned run average . After pitching in 19 games for the Montgomery Rebels in 1979, he started the 1980 season with the Evansville Triplets. He went 9-4 with a 3.37 ERA before he was promoted to the main Tigers roster.
