He played college football at Michigan from 1983 to 1986. He played in the National Football League for 14 seasons from 1987 to 2000 with his longest tenure as a player with the Chicago Bears. He served as the head coach of the San Diego Toreros , the Stanford Cardinal , and the NFL's San Francisco 49ers . In 2015, Harbaugh returned to his alma mater, the University of Michigan.
