Biography Smythies was born on 30 November 1922 in Nainital, United Provinces, British India, where his father, Evelyn Arthur Smythies, a philatelist, was employed by the Department of Forests. His brother Bertram Evelyn Smythies became an ornithologist. His cousins on the Smythies side include Yorick Smythies, Richard Dawkins , Graham Greene and Christopher Isherwood.
