Early life and education Josip Novakovich was born in Yugoslavia and grew up in the central Croatian town of Daruvar. Novakovich studied medicine at the University of Novi Sad in Serbia. He left Yugoslavia to avoid service in the Yugoslav People's Army, and moved to the United States at the age of 20. He continued his education at Vassar College , Yale Divinity School , and the University of Texas, Austin .
