He is the Holmes Professor of Belles-Lettres at Princeton University and the former chair of the English Department and director of the program in American studies. In 2004, he was suspended as a faculty member and resigned from his position as master of Butler College at Princeton, after he was found to have "inappropriately spent" approximately $20,000 from the English department.
