She received a Ph.D. in anthropology from Cornell University, an M.A. in history from the University of Hawaiʻi, and a B.A. in Asian studies from the University of Oklahoma. Prior to teaching at Columbia, Ivy taught at the University of Chicago and the University of Washington.
