According to Wikipedia, Maryse Condé is a French novelist, critic, and playwright from the French Overseas department and region of Guadeloupe. Condé is best known for her novel Ségou . Her novels explore the African diaspora that resulted from slavery and colonialism in the Caribbean. Her novels, written in French, have been translated into English, German, Dutch, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and Japanese. She has won various awards, such as the Grand Prix Littéraire de la Femme , Prix de l’Académie française , Prix Carbet de la Carraibe and the New Academy Prize in Literature for her works. She is considered a strong contender for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
