He is a senior member of the Bharatiya Janata Party since March 2014 after having served as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha from Bihar for the Janata Dal . He has been a senior bureaucrat, Member of the Planning Commission and handled assignments of Union Expenditure and Revenue Secretary. He was also Officer on Special Duty to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
