Why Is Neal Katyal Influential?
(Suggest an Edit or Addition)Neal Katyal is the Paul and Patricia Saunders Professor of National Security Law for Georgetown University’s Law Center and a practice lawyer and partner at Hogan Lovells. He earned his A.B. from Dartmouth College and J.D. from Yale University. He has been named Grand Prize Litigator of the Year by American Lawyer Magazine two different years - 2016 and 2017.
His career has been punctuated by significant achievements. He drafted the special counsel regulations that were used as guidelines for Robert Mueller’s investigation of Russian disruptive efforts preceding the 2016 U.S. Presidential election. He has successfully defended former Attorney General John Ashcroft and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 in front of the U.S. Supreme Court, in separate cases.
Katyal has been openly critical of prior handling of Japanese citizens by the Department of Justice and the administration and management of the detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, serving, in fact, as an attorney representing the rights of detainees against the United States government actions in violation of international law.
Katyal has supported the recent nominations of U.S. Supreme Court Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh. American Lawyer magazine ranks him among the top 50 litigators in the country and Legal Times has named him as among the 90 greatest lawyers of the last 30 years.
