Bhalla is a professor at University of California, Santa Cruz. Early life and education Needhi Bhalla was raised on the southern shore of Long Island near Queens. She was born to Indian parents in Khatri family who emigrated to the United States in the 1960s and 1970s for higher education opportunities. Bhalla's mother is a nutritionist and her father, a United States Air Force engineer.
