Sevcenko specialized in the history of Brazilian culture and the social development of the cities of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. He graduated from the University of São Paulo , where he also served as a professor of cultural history. He was also a member of the Center for Latin American Cultural Studies at King's College of the University of London. He also served as a visiting professor at Georgetown University, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and Harvard University.
