Amateur career Early in his career, Álvarez was named Colombia's Amateur Golfer of the Year in 2000. As an amateur, he qualified for the 2004 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club but failed to make the cut after shooting rounds of 78 and 80. Following this he qualified for the 2004 U.S. Amateur.
