He served as the head football coach at East Carolina University , the University of Wyoming , and Auburn University compiling a career college football record of 153–62–5. While the head coach at Auburn, he led the team to 4 SEC championships and was named the SEC Coach of the Year 3 times. He served as the Athletic Director at Auburn from 1981 to 1991 and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach in 2005. On November 19, 2005, the playing field in the stadium at Auburn University was named 'Pat Dye Field' in his honor.
