Early life James Randolph Gregson was born on December 11, 1918, in Jonesboro, Arkansas. He attended Arkansas State University, where he played tennis, and he graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in petroleum engineering. During World War II, he served in the United States Navy in the Pacific. After the war, he moved to New Orleans, Louisiana.
