In 1998 she was awarded an OBE for services to medical sociology, and in 2006 she was awarded a CBE for services to social science. In 2011 she was awarded a DBE for services to science. In 2013 she was one of 12 women to receive the inaugural 'Engineering and Physical Sciences' Suffrage Science award.
