Early life and education Marshall was born the Canoga Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. In 1978, he left the entertainment industry to pursue an education at Notre Dame College Prep. In 1983, he received a congressional appointment to the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York. In 1987, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in marine transportation and an officer's appointment in the United States Maritime Service.
