He is a professor in the Music Department and Affiliate Professor in Computer Science and Engineering and a founding faculty of the Halıcıoğlu Data Science Institute in the University of California, San Diego, where he has been since 2003. He is the Director of the Center for Research in Entertainment and Learning at UC San Diego's Qualcomm Institute.
