Chieh-Su Hsu

Chieh-Su Hsu was a Chinese-born American engineer. Hsu was born in Beijing on 27 May 1922, as one of six siblings, including four brothers. The family moved to Suzhou, where they remained until the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War. In 1937, Hsu and his older brother moved to Chongqing, and Hsu enrolled at the Chongqing Institute of Technology. Upon graduating in 1945, Hsu served one year in the National Revolutionary Army, then worked at Shanghai Naval Dockyard and Engineering Works from 1946 to 1947. He left for Stanford University in the United States after becoming one of sixty students to win a nationwide contest for a scholarship.

Early life and career Gibson was the son of naval officer Charles Gibson and Emmeline Mary Fletcher and was born on 3 March 1908. He studied at Mowden Preparatory School in Brighton before he was sent in 1921 to Haileybury and Imperial Service College for schooling and later joined the University of Cambridge. At Cambridge, he earned a half blue in fencing. He almost made it to the British Olympic Team. In 1929, he began his career as a professor in Chillon College, Switzerland, responsible for teaching pupils History and winter sports.

Early life Olitski was born Jevel Demikovsky in Snovsk, in Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic , a few months after his father, a commissar, was executed by the Soviet government. He emigrated to the United States in 1923 with his mother and grandmother and settled in Brooklyn. His grandmother cared for him while his mother worked to support the family. In 1926 his mother married Hyman Olitsky , a widower with two sons. A daughter was born in 1930.
