Ingeborg Rapoport was a German pediatrician who was a prominent figure in East German medicine and, at age 102, the oldest person to receive a Doctorate degree. She fled Nazi persecution and emigrated to the United States in 1938, where she completed her education in medicine. Martin's PhD is from Max-Planck-Institut für Züchtungsforschung, Cologne, where he did postdoctoral research, followed by further postdoctoral work at Institut für Genetik, Technische Universität Braunschweig, where he obtained his Habilitation in 1992.
