How Chandpur Cultivates Academic Superiority

The Chandpur Science and Technology University, a government financed public university, is the latest proof of the Bangladeshi national government’s strong commitment to world-class higher education. As the most recent addition to the ever-expanding public university system, its science and technology programs are designed for academic excellence.

Brief History

The Cabinet gave its approval for the draft bill Chandpur Science and Technology University Act of 2019 on December 23, 2019. But it wasn’t until September 9, 2020 that the bill to establish Chandpur University was enacted into law. In January 2021, Nasim Akhtar became the vice chancellor of the public university; he was appointed to a four-year term.

But Chandpur Science and Technology University has been subjected to controversies early in its establishment. In January 2022, allegations were made that the associates and relatives of Education Minister Dipu Moni acquired land for the university’s permanent campus at fraudulent land prices.

The recorded prices were much higher purchase prices than the actual amounts paid, thus, inflating land prices in the area. Moni and her associates and relatives were alleged to have profited nearly US$42 million of profit from the government’s subsequent land purchase. She denied any wrongdoing in the matter.

Programs of Study

Despite these early controversies, the people behind Chandpur Science and Technology University have carried on! Proof: On January 19, 2022, the authorities of Chandpur University started the admissions process for the honors courses. The admissions will be for the incoming academic calendar, and it’s proof that Chandpur University of Science and Technology will hit the ground running after a bump.

The 2022 academic year will start with three departments opening its doors to students. These departments offer bachelor’s degrees in business administration, information, and communication technology (ICT), and computer science and engineering (CSE). These are disciplines that the Bangladeshi people are in need of further development for jobs creation and industry advancement.

For starters, only 30 students will be enrolled in each of the three departments. Over time, the number of students will increase. More departments will also be opened for enrollment in the coming academic years as Chandpur University gains its footing in the national education landscape.

There are plans of offering engineering disciplines in the near future, too. These include civil engineering, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering.

While the permanent campus is being constructed on the 60-acre land acquired for Chandpur University, classes will be held in rented houses nearby. Teacher recruitment is also underway. Student hostels as well as the administrative and academic buildings are still under construction.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the administrators of Chandpur Science and Technology University are ready to comply with health guidelines. Normal activities related to the academic calendar and other university-related programs will continue as planned.
