History The College at Brockport opened as the Brockport Collegiate Institute in 1841. It was a private "academy," part of the widespread academy movement of the time. Public schooling only went through the sixth grade, there were few middle or high schools, and fewer colleges. The academies were meant to fill this gap. The Collegiate Institute was open to not only men but women, and people of color. Fannie Barrier Williams Class of 1870, started in the Collegiate Institute for example. Although an innovative educational form, the academies typically struggled financially.
