Brad was unanimously chosen as Marshall’s 38th president in October 2021 and began acting in the role in January 2022. He was officially installed as president in a ceremony on September 16, 2022.
As a Marshall alum, Brad has remained a dedicated servant-leader to his alma mater over the years. Understanding the value of education – viewing it as “the great equalizer” – Brad, alongside his wife — now Marshall First Lady — Alys Smith have supported the university and its students over the years by giving both their time and financial support. In 2015, the Smiths bestowed $10 million to establish a scholarship fund specifically for students in underserved communities. Brad and Alys also contributed $25 million to Marshall’s school of business to establish entrepreneurial resources for students and community members alike. This eventually led to the creation of the Brad D. Smith Student Incubator.
Hailing from Kenova, West Virginia, Brad has continuously supported his home state throughout his career to “give back to the house that built him.” Brad and Alys co-founded the Wing 2 Wing Foundation to support West Virginia’s development across three pillars: education, entrepreneurship and the environment. Additionally, the Smiths have collaborated with West Virginia University to establish the Brad and Alys Smith Outdoor Economic Development Collaborative (OEDC). The OEDC utilizes the natural resources and amenities of West Virginia to reinvigorate the state’s economy.
According to Wikipedia, Brad D. Smith is an American businessman and the former chief executive officer of Intuit. He held the position from 2008 to 2018. On October 28, 2021, Smith was named president of Marshall University, his alma mater.
