Agoncillo is best known for her work in the development of the first Philippine flag. Her mother Marcela was assigned the task of modeling a Philippine flag off of the existing Cuban flag, and Agoncillo, then seven years old, assisted with the sewing. The project took five days, and Agoncillo’s father waved the flag from his house after the Philippines declared independence in June of 1898.
Agoncillo cherished the Catholic religion, and would have lived her life as a nun had she not been prevented by a kidney disease. Agoncillo was charitable and involved in many causes. When the Malate Catholic School was damaged, she ensured the school was restored so that classes could continue. She taught for over 50 years at the school, and received a Plaque of Merit for her services.
