Julie Nelson is a professor of economics at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. She earned her B.A. from St. Olaf College, and an M.A. and Ph.D in economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Nelson is one of the most highly regarded feminist economists and one of the founders of the field.

Her most compelling work, Beyond Economic Man: Feminist Theory and Economics, is regarded as the seminal work in feminist economics. Her research has sought to humanize economics, suggesting that it is harmful to attempt an understanding of economics as devoid of social influence – ignoring the human cost for economic decisions and assessment of value. She has written other pieces posing provocative economic questions, such as “Would Women Leaders Have Prevented the Global Financial Crisis? Implications for Teaching about Gender”, Behavior and Economics and “Is Dismissing the Precautionary Principle the Manly Thing to Do? Gender and the Economics of Climate Change”.

In addition to her writing, she is an associate editor for Feminist Economics, a peer-reviewed, academic journal and a senior research fellow at Tuft University’s Global Development and Environment Institute. She is a founding member of the International Association for Feminist Economics and a member of the Economics for Equity and The Environment (E3) Network.
