Why is this person notable and influential?

Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi is a Hungarian-American Psychologist who is currently the Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Management at Claremont Graduate University. Before Claremont, Csikszentmihalyi was Head of the Department of Psychology at the University of Chicago as well as the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Lake Forest College. Csikszentmihalyi coined the now well-known term “flow,” referring to the intense state of focus humans achieve when actively engaged in interesting tasks. Mihaly received his B.A. and his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago before becoming a professor there in 1969.

Csikszentmihalyi’s influential career in psychology has focused on the phenomena of happiness and creativity, out of which his concept of flow derives. His best-selling book Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience, Csikszentmihalyi explains flow as a state of maximal happiness where we get “lost” in what we are doing by fully engaging our skills and capacities. The book has been enormously influential in positive psychology, the branch of psychology concerned with positive psychological states like happiness.

Csikszentmihalyi received the Clifton Strengths Prize as well as the Széchenyi Prize in Budapest in 2011. He was awarded the Grand Cross Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary in 2014. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences; a member of both the National Academy of Education and the National Academy of Leisure Sciences.
