Why Is Rogers Smith Influential?

Rogers Smith is the Christopher H. Browne Distinguished Professor of Political Science for the University of Pennsylvania, an author and political scientist. He earned a B.A. in political science at Michigan State University’s James Madison College, and an M.A. and Ph.D in government from Harvard University. He is a noted scholar in the areas of political thought, race, gender, inequalities, and constitutional law.

His most famous work, Civic Ideals, was recognized as a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in history in 1998 and won awards from the Organization of American Historians and the American Political Science Association. He has also written such works as Citizenship Without Consent: the Illegal Alien in the American Polity, The Unsteady March: The Rise and Decline of Racial Equality in America, and Stories of Peoplehood: The Politics and Morals of Political Memberships.

Smith became a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society. He has served as vice president (2008-2009) and president of the American Political Science Association (since 2018). In 2016, he co-founded the Teachers Institute of Philadelphia, and is a former chair of what is now known as the Andrea Mitchell Center for the Study of Democracy.
