Why Is Bob Allen Influential?

Robert (Bob) Carson Allen was born in Salem, Massachusetts in 1947. He earned a B.A. from Carleton College before completing his PhD at Harvard University.

His diverse interests have included agricultural history, education policies, the extinction of whales in the Arctic, and economic history. He is the author of six books, the first of which, Enclosure and the Yeoman: The Agricultural Development of the South Midlands, 1450-1850 and Farm to Factory: A Re-interpretation of the Soviet Industrial Revolution, were awarded the Ranki Prize by the Economic History Association. One of his recent works, published by the University of Oxford, is titled, Spinning their Wheels: A Reply to Jane Humphries and Benjamin Schneider, in which Allen contests the findings of the aforementioned in regards to high wages in 18th century England spurring on mechanization and technological unemployment. The economic impacts and implications of high wages figure prominently in Allen’s work, as he has written about wages throughout industrialized Europe, America, and Asia, often viewing employment and wages through the lens of class structure and inequality.

Allen has been teaching for 46 years, with his first professorship at Hamilton College to his current role as a Global Distinguished Professor of Economic History at New York University in Abu Dhabi.
