About Nanyang Technological University
Nanyang Technological University (NTU) is a public research university that was founded in 1981 as the Nanyang Technological Institute. Ten years later, in 1991, the institute was upgraded to university status.
NTU’s name derives from the fact that its campus is adjacent to that of former Nanyang University, near Yunnan Garden, in the western part of the island. Nanyang University was founded in 1955 to serve the ethnic-Chinese community of Singapore. However, there is no direct administrative continuity between Nanyang University and NTU.
In 1980, the University of Singapore merged with Nanyang University to form today’s National University of Singapore (NUS). The Nanyang Technological Institute was established the following year, in 1981, as NUS’s engineering school. Over the years, NTU gradually became more and more administratively distinct from NUS, finally achieving full autonomy in 2006.
Today, in addition to its core undergraduate and graduate engineering programs, NTU comprises several internationally known professional schools and institutes, such the Nanyang Business School, the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (administered jointly with Imperial College London), the National Institute of Education, and the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies.
