Colleges and Universities in Tennessee
About one third of the higher learning institutes in Tennessee are public schools. Students who attend these schools can expect to pay anywhere between $4,000 to $13,000 in tuition and have the option to pursue degrees in fields such as economics, history, nursing, literature, education, and criminal justice. Tennessee’s largest public school, the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, boasts some impressive alumni, including Oprah Winfrey, Kurt Vonnegut, and Cormac McCarthy. The private school alumni are equally as notable. For example, author James Patterson and Nobel Peace Prize recipient Muhammad Yunus both attended Vanderbilt University in Nashville.

Tennessee also offers nearly 30 religiously affiliated schools, the largest being Belmont University in Nashville, located just blocks from the famous Music Row. Here, students can study a wide range of fields including Christian leadership, audio engineering technology, and biophysics. Additionally, Tennessee offers students several loan forgiveness programs. Math and science teachers, minority teachers, and registered nurses interested in becoming teachers or administrators who meet certain requirements may be eligible.
Tennessee is home to mouthwatering barbecues, electrified blues, and the sweeping majesty of the Smoky Mountains National Park. And with access to countless historic sites, unique museums, and lush green spaces, students attending one of the more than 60 colleges and universities in The Volunteer State will have plenty to do and see in their downtime.

Students’ Submitted Questions on Best Online Master’s Programs in Tennessee
Mary asks, “How does the cost of an online program compare to traditional on-campus programs?”
Dr. James Barham’s answer: The cost comparison will vary based on several factors. Typically, online degree tuition fees are lower than their on-campus counterparts. Students will also not have to worry about commuting costs, meal plans, or housing costs (if they can live at home while working). Online students will typically have greater flexibility, meaning that they can work more than traditional students and hopefully pay off more schooling as they go along. Online students should be aware of fees such as technology fees, any educational subscriptions they might need, and other costs associated with the program.
JP asks, “How flexible are the course schedules for working professionals?”
Dr. Jed Macosko’s answer: Keep in mind that this will differ based on the program, but many online programs are asynchronous, meaning that students can access the lectures and assignments on their own time. Because of this, many people can work full time while earning their online degree. Additionally, it will most likely be possible to complete the degree part-time to ensure students have enough time to work during their course of study. Talk to the admissions office and look for information about the program online so that you can make sure that the program has the flexibility you need.
Jacoby asks, “How are final projects or theses managed in an online format?”
Dr. James Barham’s answer: Online programs will use digital tools and platforms to facilitate communication and research. Just like traditional students, online students will develop a topic or proposal and discuss it with their faculty advisor or a theses committee. Once they have received feedback, they will conduct research using digital libraries and online databases. As students create drafts or move along in their research, they will most likely have regular meetings with their advisor or committee. Finally, if the program requires a presentation or defense, this will typically take place on a video conference call. If not, students will submit their project digitally.
