Marshall University was formed in 1837, and was named in honor of former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, John Marshall. The Huntington, West Virginia-based public research university is most noted today for its excellence in the performing arts, forensic sciences, and criminal justice.
For much of the 19th century, Marshall was a college in name only. In the midst of the Civil War, Marshall found itself in one of the 50 counties which splintered into West Virginia.
