2025 Ranking Update

Our Influence Ranking Engine™ leverages machine learning to track the real-world influence of colleges and universities over time. Below you’ll see which schools gained or lost ground for the 2025 school year.

In 2025, the top schools in our ranking of the best online colleges for veterans to start their careers saw no change in ranking positions. This was a result of all the schools in the ranking making similar improvements to their curriculum, internship opportunities, and other program features.

Our nation’s heroes are our active duty service members and veterans who have sacrificed to serve our country. Having gone through rigorous military training, they risked their lives, careers, and stability for everyone’s safety at home.

As a gesture of gratitude, the education industry started providing degree programs for veterans at the best online colleges. Military and veteran affairs offices, often alongside recognized student veteran organizations, provide military benefits, included at institutions that accept military tuition assistance and military transfer credits, or offer military resource centers for their spouses and families.

The online bachelor’s degree programs at an online college allow military and veteran students to pursue their academic goals and earn a college degree at their liberty and pace. Graduate degrees are also offered.

The opportunity to obtain in-depth knowledge in a specialist field in an online degree program, increase salary potential, and gain access to student services that support career preparation are among the many reasons to choose online colleges at one of the best universities for military students.

The range of transferable skills military members acquire during their service gives military or ex-military students an edge, propelling them to jumpstart their careers outside the armed forces.

How Active Duty Servicemen and Women Can Take Advantage of Support Benefits at Online Colleges

Many of the 16.5 million veterans all over the US are now pursuing online degrees while enlisting or shortly afterward. Students can attend online classes while deployed elsewhere.

After deployment, discharge, or retirement, these students can often benefit from studying online to maximize their civilian career options, increase their depth of knowledge, and boost their chances of a promotion in the military. Students serving overseas or paused from their education for military reasons are accommodated by most schools.

The Post-9/11 GI Bill pays tuition and fees for many public colleges and universities. Schools that accept the GI Bill can be found on the Department of Veterans Affairs website.

For veterans who wish to attend a private college or an out-of-state college with higher tuition than the GI Bill will cover, the Yellow Ribbon Program can help to cover those tuition costs. However, not all colleges that offer the Post-9/11 GI Bill offer the Yellow Ribbon Program. It is important to check with the college that you are interested in attending to get an idea of the benefits they provide.

Earning a degree at an online college can be challenging for active-duty personnel and veterans. Some might not be able to catch up with their education after high school. Such learners will have to brush up and refresh their knowledge of some basic subjects and courses.

A military-friendly online college often provides tutors and advisers with military backgrounds. And as an online learner in a military friendly college, you will have access to such services and resources.

Resources are available to help prospective students succeed in school. For example, Harvard and Princeton professors lead in-person and virtual sessions simulating college life.

One of the best programs for military students who want a refresher on some business and STEM subjects is the Warrior-Scholar Project. Academic boot camps are offered in this program for one to two weeks. Currently, there are more than 2,000 veterans who have attended these academic boot camps and workshops.

In some cases, psychological trauma might prevent veterans from earning a degree at an online college. Veterans in need of therapy are encouraged to begin therapy with organizations like the Real Warriors Campaign.

Topics covered include anger, grief, and sleep deprivation, which veterans commonly experience. The campaign was launched in 2009 to support the Psychological Health Center of Excellence of the Department of Defense. This campaign helps address psychological health concerns and encourages those suffering from psychological difficulties to seek help.

Bottom Line: Military students should take advantage of the many resources that the best online colleges for veterans offers to them.

Free Tuition Online Colleges Options for Veterans

Today, about 2,500 colleges nationwide offer online bachelor’s classes. Most of these military friendly online colleges options offer financial assistance in the form of federal financial aid and credit for military service.

As part of their military education benefits, eligible active duty members, veterans, and their families have access to scholarships, the GI Bill®, the Yellow Ribbon program, and tuition discounts.

Below is information on some states and their many military friendly online colleges that run their own veterans educational assistance program and military tuition assistance to veterans and active military personnel:

Alabama

Those who receive the Purple Heart Medal may be eligible to receive tuition and fees waived at public technical colleges, community colleges, and universities in Alabama.

California

College fee waivers are available for dependents of veterans at all California Community Colleges, schools in the California State University system, and the University of California under the College Fee Waiver for Veteran Dependents benefit program. However, the waivers do not apply to books or housing expenses.

Connecticut

Tuition waivers and college credits are available for veterans living in Connecticut who wish to attend community and technical colleges and state universities. But one of their requirements is that veterans should have had three months of active duty service or military experience. When you apply for admission, you also must be a Connecticut resident.

Florida

State universities and community colleges in Central Florida offer free undergraduate tuition to qualified military veterans. The benefit does not cover textbooks, food, or housing fees. Purple Heart recipients and those with combat decorations superior in precedence are eligible for this Florida state military educational benefit.

Illinois

Illinois Tuition Grants are offered by colleges, universities, and community colleges in Illinois that offer free tuition and fees to Illinois veterans. An honorable discharge from active duty, six months of living in Illinois before joining the service, and returning to Illinois as a resident within six months are all required for eligibility.

Maryland

One of the veteran scholarships offered at Maryland State is the Edward T. Conroy and Mary A. Conroy Memorial Scholarship. Veterans attending Maryland institutions of higher learning can receive assistance with tuition and other education expenses.

Montana

Within the Montana University system, veterans are entitled to free tuition. An honorable discharge from one of the branches of the US Armed Forces is required, as is a legal Montana residency and a good track record in academics.

New York

One effective way for the state of New York to motivate its residents to attend New York public colleges and vocational institutions is by offering Veteran Tuition Awards. The award gives veterans free tuition for ten semesters for a bachelor’s degree, six semesters for a master’s degree, and four semesters for a vocational degree.

Texas

Veterans in Texas can receive tuition and fees at state-supported colleges and universities for up to 150 credit hours. Applicants must have served at least 181 days in the military, be honorably discharged, and not have defaulted on their federal education loans to qualify for these benefits.

Washington

Colleges in Washington offer waivers to eligible resident veterans. The state offers waivers of tuition and fees to qualified veterans up to the total amount.

Take a look at colleges that offer the most generous financial aid.

Bottom Line: In many states, veterans who are interested in earning an online degree at an online college may receive tuition and fee waivers in additional to their military education benefits.

Benefits of Online Colleges for Military Spouses and Families

Military spouses and dependents can also attend military friendly online colleges that offer different types of service and support:

Financial Aid

Military families can become eligible for the Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits and other forms of scholarship to cover college costs. Spouses of active-duty service members and qualified family members who recently completed high school can also apply for workforce development programs.

Additional Transferable Credits

Military-friendly online colleges allow additional transferable credits for military spouses and dependents, following a free preliminary review of college and university courses they completed. The institution usually has the right to accept or deny credits based on the policy outlined in their rules and credit guidance.

Flexible Classes and Schedules

Asynchronous programs for veterans are common in online courses. The virtual classes are not held at a specific time for learners. This arrangement favors active-duty military personnel, allowing them to schedule their classes around their academic and military activities. Even better, military spouses and children enjoy the benefit of flexible online classes in these programs.

Bottom Line: The ability to transfer credit from a student’s military experience to an online degree program can significantly shorten time to graduation in these flexible online colleges.

Student Submitted Questions about the Online Colleges for Veterans

What is the difference between the Post-9/11 GI Bill and the Yellow Ribbon Program?

The Post-9/11 GI Bill pays for public in-state tuition and fees. However, if a recipient wants to attend a private or out-of-state college or university, tuition rates may be more than the GI Bill will cover.

The Yellow Ribbon Program can veterans pay for higher out-of-state, private school, or graduate school tuition and fees that the Post-9/11 GI Bill doesn’t cover. It is important to note, though, that not all schools participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program.

If you are still active duty military, an online college can be a great choice for you, too.
