Lacrosse has been growing in popularity in college athletics in the United States. It has gained significant traction at the college level and has seen expansion both in terms of the number of schools offering college lacrosse programs and the number of players participating.

Lacrosse is the rare area of college athletics dominated by schools concentrated entirely in the Northeastern U.S. With only a few exceptions in the Top 20—University of Virginia (#9), Northwestern University (#12) and Duke (#16)—the remainder of the list is made up of colleges in the Mid-Atlantic and New England regions.
