Obviously, the Canadian Hockey League is the epitome of the sport, but there are a number of excellent hockey programs in the United States. The best colleges and universities for hockey are largely located in states with notoriously frigid winters. In fact, every single one of these top 25 college athletics programs is located in a cold-weather American state like Massachusetts, Minnesota, or Michigan.
The University of Wisconsin–Madison, the University of North Dakota, and Boston College top the list of destinations for NCAA hockey players. Wisconsin–Madison ranks the highest on the strength of the Canadian National team’s all-time scorer, Dany Heatley, as well as three-time Stanley Cup champion and Hockey Hall of Famer Chris Chelios and Olympic Gold Medal goalie Curtis Joseph.

Cost of Degree: $63,870Expenses: $18,130Starting Salary: $60,100Cost Recoup Time: 19 yearsPaid back at 15% of annual salarySince its establishment in 1925, the St. Lawrence University men’s hockey program has consistently been a strong contender in American college hockey. Remarkably, despite its modest student body of around 2,000 and Division III status in other sports, the program has defied expectations with 16 NCAA tournament appearances and nine Frozen Four appearances since 1951.
Even more extraordinary is that St. Lawrence University maintains Division I “play-up” status in hockey. In a strategic move to enhance the program, they introduced hockey scholarships in the mid-1990s.
