The best colleges and universities for hockey are largely located in states with notoriously frigid winters. In fact, every single one of these top 25 college athletics programs is located in a cold-weather American state like Massachusetts, Minnesota, or Michigan.

The University of Wisconsin–Madison, the University of North Dakota, and Boston College top the list of destinations for NCAA hockey players. Wisconsin–Madison ranks the highest on the strength of the Canadian National team’s all-time scorer, Dany Heatley, as well as three-time Stanley Cup champion and Hockey Hall of Famer Chris Chelios and Olympic Gold Medal goalie Curtis Joseph.

The University of Maine’s hockey team has an outstanding record in NCAA Tournament games, winning 28 of their last 46 games and winning two national titles in 1993 and 1999. The team experienced a setback in the 1991–1992 season, but they were able to make a stunning return with the help of talented first-year students Paul Kariya and the Ferraro brothers.

With a record of 42-1-2 after their outstanding play, the team won the HEA regular season championship, the HEA conference championship, and their first-ever national championship. Thanks to these wins, they now have a firm position in collegiate hockey history.

Since its establishment in 1925, the St. Lawrence University men’s hockey program has consistently been a strong contender in American college hockey. Remarkably, despite its modest student body of around 2,000 and Division III status in other sports, the program has defied expectations with 16 NCAA tournament appearances and nine Frozen Four appearances since 1951.

Even more extraordinary is that St. Lawrence University maintains Division I “play-up” status in hockey. In a strategic move to enhance the program, they introduced hockey scholarships in the mid-1990s.

Ice hockey at Clarkson University has had some memorable moments. They demonstrated offensive brilliance as one of the ECAC’s original members in 1961 but lost to Michigan Tech in the NCAA tournament final in 1962. They won the ICAC and ECAC championships in 1966. They made it to the championship game of the 1970 NCAA tournament but fell just short of Cornell.

Despite successive victories, Mark Morris took over as coach for the 1985 campaign, leading to the program’s comeback to prominence.
